Eric Roth to perform on 19th century guitar at Phelps Mansion, 191 Court Street, Binghamton, NY
Saturday, June 17, 7 p.m.
Native son Eric Roth returns to Binghamton to give a classical guitar concert at the Phelps Museum on Saturday, June 17, at 7 p.m. at 191 Court Street in Binghamton. Eric grew up in Conklin where he attended Susquehanna Valley High School and Broome Community College. He has lived in the New Paltz area in New York’s Hudson Valley region since 1994, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from SUNY New Paltz, NY. He frequently performs at public and private events throughout New York’s Hudson Valley Region and beyond and serves as a board member of the Mid-Hudson Classical Guitar Society.
Eric will present a program of guitar music from the nineteenth century in alignment with the interpretive period of the historic Phelps Museum. The nineteenth century was a time of striking innovation and development of this familiar instrument and is rich with intriguing and delightful repertoire. The program will include works from Vienna, Spain, and England, and will feature music by Catharina Josepha Pratten (1821-1895), the first great woman guitar composer, as well as Sor, Matiegka, Mertz, Shand, Tarrega, and others. Selected works from other time periods may also be included for reasons of context or variety. Music will be performed on a beautiful, authentic reproduction instrument modeled after one built in 1830. Eric will also provide information about the instrument, repertoire, composers, and history.
Eric Roth specializes in historical instruments, including the 19th Century (Early Romantic) Guitar and the Renaissance Lute and has received lessons from David Temple, Kenneth Meyer, David Starobin, Patrick O’Brien, Bill Matthews, Bonnie Robiczek Meadow, Gregory Dinger, and Binghamton’s own, Paul Sweeny. Eric’s interest also extends to modern classical music. He has performed avant-garde music on the lute and electric guitar with the Eric Ross Ensemble, based in Binghamton, and serves as president of the Poné Ensemble for New Music, New Paltz.
